Airships scattered throughout the sky like burning stars. Anatomical machines walking the dark damp streets of London. A sea of black bowler hats and trench coats underscored by the intrinsic beauty of rich velvet reds, and silken burgundies…
That is the spirit of Steampunk Fashion. Victorian influences integrated with future technologies. It looks old but feels futuristic, even apocalyptic. It’s a world abound with monumental technologies and characters that are equally as large. Mad scientists, philosophers, adventurers, and air pirates are characters found in the world that is powered by steam, natural gas, coal, and electricity.
The spirit of Steampunk extends to the whimsical wanderlust and optimism found in novels like The Time Machine. Makerism, idealism, innovation, and rebellion are the core ideals of Steampunk. Those ideals and that spirit strive towards the greater good, fighting to make the world a better place.
Inspired by the science fiction adventures of writers like Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Tim Powers, and James Blaylock, the Victorian Era subgenre, Steampunk, found its foothold when K.W. Jeter coined the term in the 19th century.
Steampunk lives in many mediums – books, art, films, fashion and television shows. It’s beginning to come out of the fog and unto the main stage. Soon the Steampunk world will light up the night sky with all the majesty of an exploding zeppelin. It’s everywhere and it’s wonderful.
